Logan Movie Review

Logan is (supposedly) the final chapter in Hugh Jackman’s 17 year run as the character of Wolverine as stated by the actor himself. The plot is as follows: an ageing Logan (Wolverine) travels with an ailing Professor Xavier in order to protect a young mutant named Laura.

The X-Men franchise has been going on for 17 years and in that time it has seen many high points and many low points. Logan is undoubtedly a high point.

If you choose to watch this movie, do not expect just another X-Men film. Because you will be dissatisfied. This movie has no attempted humour and no large world-threatening ending. It's a lot more somber and gritty- it even crossed the boundary from action movie to drama at many points. But that isn't to say that there's no action, because there is a lot of it and it is all extremely well-choreographed and fluidly shot.

While on the topic of action scenes, it is worth saying that the movie has a 15 rating. And it wasn't just tacked on due to the success of Deadpool, it really works for what the film is trying to be. The 15 age rating adds language and blood to the film, and that's really a good thing. It works perfectly with the tone of the movie and without it the film wouldn’t have been as successful in my opinion.

Probably the strongest part of the movie is the acting. Hugh Jackman delivers his best performance as Wolverine, and arguably his best performance period. You can tell that he was pulling out all of the stops, and he does knock it out of the park. Dafne Keen, the young actress who plays Laura, gives a powerful performance with minimal dialogue. It is honestly unbelievable that it's only her second performance. Mark my words, that girl is going to be massive.

But the best performance in the movie is definitely Patrick Stewart's. He balances the confusion of age perfectly with the power of his mutation. His performance is heart-breaking, and it is genuinely worth an Oscar nomination.

It was difficult to find faults in this movie as everything is done so skilfully, however there were a few that stood out to me. The first one and probably the biggest is the rewatchablitly of this movie. As good as it was, I don't see it being a film that you watch every other day. The grimy atmosphere can get a little bit depressing and I think two viewings close together would be hard to sit through. In the same way that you don't watch Schindler's List every week, you wouldn’t watch Logan every week either.

The second flaw of this movie is that some of the plot elements don't really make sense. Now these elements are tiny and it may seem like I'm nitpicking, but these small details did take away from my viewing experience. I'm not going to say what they are and I do think I may be alone on this criticism, but they did annoy me a little bit. It seems to me that if some characters did just one thing, then everything would be averted and I can't understand why they didn't do it.

My verdict is that the film is enjoyable in small doses and is a very well made film. If you are a fan of superhero movies or just great film-making I suggest you check it out.

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
