What Is It Like At WLA?

WLA is a wonderful place to fulfil any opportunities that may bypass us at other secondary schools, such as the chance to work with Sellafield and a broader range of subjects and A-levels. But for those who have siblings or relatives who are going to become future WLA students, here is an outlook on what we have for offer.

Science

We have all 3 main Science subjects covered at WLA. With a wide variety of practical’s from finding starch in leaves to heating and cooling egg whites. Always being prepared, our Science department includes new knowledge and opportunities to learn and discover hidden realms of our hidden world that you may not have known.

Technology

Our 4 main Technology departments, Textiles, Food Tech, Engineering and Wood, are highly-skilled subjects to take on. Having skills like the ones you earn during your Tech lessons can land you jobs such as a chef, an engineer, a fashion designer or a manual labourer. Plus an opportunity to use extensive machinery; you must have some sort of sensibility to take on these tasks.

PE

At WLA, the chance to excel in many sports, for example, basketball or even cross country, is incredibly high thanks to a large sports hall, a smaller gym, 2 grass pitches and our large multi-sports cage to show off your tekkers to our high-quality PE teachers, who will guide you on your path to sports stardom.

Drama

Your chance to become the next Leonardo DiCaprio or Jennifer Lawrence is provided through our fantastic drama setup here at WLA, including extensive research of various plays and a chance to display your fine acting knowledge before your time on the silver screen. We also have a great Rock Challenge setup here at WLA.

Art

At WLA, we allow students to be creative and unique, and art is a great way to show that. With things such as photography, where catching that perfect sunset is a must, not all of our art is based around paints and colours, as we also can mould and design using clay to replicate other artists artwork.

Music

Want to become a rockstar or even a choir singer? Music would be the high note of WLA. During your earlier years here at WLA, you will find out about the history of music, from the Baroque era to the modern day. Along that time, you will learn such instruments as piano and guitar, plus the more complicated side like chords. Then you will be singing and playing to your heart (or your lungs’) content.

Maths

An eye-catching opportunity to dive into a Pi filled world in the Maths Department is always on offer at WLA. Through tough challenges set, you will identify skills such as resilience and focus during your Maths lessons. These can help you in a variety of jobs when you leave school for any life problems you face after school.

Modern Foreign Languages

Immerse yourself into another culture in our fantastic MFL setup. With the choices of either French or Spanish, this will be a massive help if you are looking to move abroad or if you just want to be a multi-linguist for better jobs in the major cities globally. Your possibilities are endless in the MFL department.

PD

Personal Development provides you with life skills such as jobs and finance and looking at how to use it cost-efficiently. We also look at more personal things such as medical conditions and weight. PD is about looking into the future and to see what your adult life will be when you leave school.

English

English is great if you want to become a writer, journalist or even a motivational speaker. At WLA, we express English through role play, presentations, discussions and also through understanding the concept of English by finding new skills to add to and progress your writing until your writing like Shakespeare.

Geography

At WLA, Geography is all about the physical effects on our environment and how it affects us in the upcoming decades. It makes you more aware of the world around us and it teaches you fantastic awareness and knowledge of our world. Geography is great if you want to be an adventurer or a natural scientist.

History

Go back in time at WLA with our History department. Learn about the gore and greatness of our predecessor’s by having freedom. In History, large scale projects give you the chance to show your creativity in various ways. History is about interpreting sources and giving your opinion on the sources.

IT

Become a computer whiz in your IT lessons by taking on the subject. IT can teach you coding and the basics of computers that can take you to certain jobs at Sellafield or it could make you the man of the office. IT is a journey through the wild world of computing, and the best place to learn this is at WLA.

RE

WLA understands that students need to learn about all religions and what better place to do it than at WLA. Here, you can learn about all faiths and what they teach us about our way of living.
