The whole of Year 10 have been learning the topic of awareness for their SMSC day, which covers range of topics, including:

  • Sexual health

  • Alcohol awareness

  • Mental health and stress management

  • Antisocial behaviour

  • Shunburn- Skin cancer and sun safety

  • Sport competition

One of the sessions revolved around anti-social behaviour and what kind of behaviour comes across as anti-social. The year 10’ listened to the guest speaker, Ms Irving, who said, “We are trying to get people to understand that their behaviour can be seen as anti-social, and the effects of this.”

Anti-social behaviour is any kind of activity that impacts other people (often when in public) in a negative way. It is often inconsiderate of the people around them, and can cause harm to an individual, community or the surrounding environment. One student in the session said, “I never knew that my behaviour could come across as anti-social. It honestly never dawned on me! I am now more aware about my behaviour and my public expectations.”

Year 10s also learned about the consequences of their behaviour, especially in public situations and that such a small action can escalate to something much larger when it could easily have been prevented. They also learned how this behaviour can directly impact their future. Anti-social behaviour can lead to police involvement in the future, which can actually lower a persons chances of getting a job - something important for 15 year olds to think about, due to the huge impact it can have on their future. Many people don’t think about the effects of their behaviour, but the session was created to warn people of the consequences.

The year 10s learned that examples of anti-social behaviour can include:

  • Nuisance, rowdy or inconsiderate neighbours

  • Vandalism, graffiti and flyposting

  • Street drinking

  • Environmental damage including littering, dumping of rubbish and abandonment of cars

  • Fireworks misuse

  • Inconsiderate or inappropriate use of vehicles (Police.uk).

Year 10 have now learned the effects that their behaviour can actually have - everyone knew that anti-social behaviour was bad, but now they know the full extent of the consequences that their behaviour and actions have.
