One of our destination on this fun and amazing day was a lesson on how to handle and treat cuts, bleeds and breaks while here the pupils had the lessons on how to make different bandages and slings. One of these was a support sling you would make for someone who had a fracture or break on their arm. Although the pupils struggled to start with creating the bandages eventually they understood it and were actually very talented.
We had the chance to interview Mr. Brown (the person who was teaching the pupils) we asked him why he thinks it’s important to be teaching first aid to the younger pupils. His response was, “I think it’s something everyone should learn and especially at such a young age is it saves people going to the hospital; helping take some strain off the NHS and it also gives people the knowledge that they can help themselves and others.” We also asked him why he chose to teach this of all things. He answered, “I chose this because it’s a crucial subject to learn, it’s interesting and it’s an easy subject to engage the pupils, so as well as gaining crucial learning they are having fun.”
We also interviewed one of the students undertaking the lesson. I asked him why he thinks it’s important to study this area and his reply was: “it’s core curriculum, if at some point in the future I come across someone who is injured and bleeding heavily I can help them survive the incident and give them a bandage/sling if needed.” I also asked if he was actually enjoying studying it, he responded, “ yes, very much, as I said previously, it’s something which is crucial for later life and in general it’s something that’s fun as you’re learning through work which is predominantly practical.”
