Culinary Skills

In the Year 12 SMSC day, Ms Bell talks about her past experience at University with what not to do with your low income during your university days.

The Year 12s were made to work as a team to construct a meal. They were chosen to make cheese and broccoli pasta, which involves the low in price ingredients of:

- 100 grams of broccoli

- 100 milliliters of milk

- 25 grams of margarine

- 100 grams of chopped onions

- 200 grams of pasta spirals

- 100 grams of button mushrooms

One of the students named Amber said, ‘I like how it encourages us to work as a team,’ as she was working with some people who she rarely mixes with. She was basically the team leader as she assigned roles to the people in her group. Amber presented team working skills and confidence, which is a necessary trait when working as a group in a University environment.

Another student, Rebecca, said, ‘It’s a really good experience,’ she said that she doesn’t really cook at home however this task has encouraged her to help out more at home.

One of the teachers, Mr Gibson, stated, ‘it’s a great experience for the Year 12s to learn the skills necessary to cook for themselves. These skills include chopping and using appliances around the kitchen. Overall, this was an amazing experience and I really enjoyed participating in the tasks given.’

As well as this, each of the teams were given two sweet potatoes and were given half an hour to make something out of them, a winner was picked at the end.

One student said: ‘It was a good opportunity to understand the costs and money saving ideas when it comes to university. I’ve found this really valuable.’
