In the fire safety awareness talk, there were two firemen who kindly volunteered go through the dangers of car accidents and fire safety. This is a vitally important session as most sixth formers are starting to learn to drive and move house and could potentially be involved in an accident. They showed a PowerPoint of the ways in which you should act during a fire, such as keeping calm.

One of the firemen said, ‘fires kill people mainly because they are inexperienced and haven’t had fire awareness,’ which is the reason why this session is so important. Most of us will be moving away from home, so we won’t have parents or teachers to lead us out during a fire.

‘The most important rule of surviving a fire is getting yourself out and leaving any possessions, because none of your possessions are worth more than your life.’

Car accident awareness

Video re-enactments of accidents were also shown, which were graphic and shocking. The aim was to show students the harsh reality of driving a car and what can be a consequence of irresponsible driving.

They also went through what to do when you come across a car accident, giving us tips such as:

-Approaching the car with caution

-Not entering the car if the air bags haven’t been deployed, because they could still go off and cause further injury.

-Holding someone’s head still if they are unconscious, so they do not hurt their head

If you are the first on scene of a crash you:

Firstly call 999 or 112, because if it’s a crash you need the police, an ambulance and possibly fire fighters.

Secondly you approach the crash only if it is safe. If think the crash is unsafe for you and that you may become injured, meaning you aren’t a help to emergency services, you are only a nuisance.
