Two guest speakers had very kindly come in to talk to the Year Sevens in order to teach them about the LGBTQ+ community. The guest speakers were from ‘The Proud Trust’ organisation. In their sessions, they both spoke about gender identity, gender expression, biological sex and sexual orientation. In fact, Mrs. Wallace had a few words to say about how she viewed the topic. She believed that it is important to learn about the topic in a safe and respectable environment, so that people can feel more comfortable discussing what it is about and how they feel based on this topic. By discussing it in school, it can help students understand the topic and be respectful towards the LGBTQ+ community. It can also help students get over stigmas surrounding the topic, for example, “if a man were to walk down the street in a dress, would they be treated the same as a man in trousers?”. Sadly, many people still hide who they really are because they are scared of the judgement that may come with this. We believe that it is important to learn about what the LGBTQ+ community actually is earlier on in life so that this community can be understood, accepted, and not discriminated against because people are scared because of what they don’t know. In fact, one of the guest speakers said that it’s not always talked about so it might be scary for anyone, so if we talked about it more it can be more accepted.
