What is Extremism?

The humanities department have worked hard to come up with this lesson for SMSC Day, as this topic can be seen as a touchy subject at this time. However, many of the teachers (for example Mr Walker) believe that it is crucial that we share awareness on what extremism is. As a result of the recent situations, there are many different views on who or what an extremist is.

This class was being taught to Year Sevens because the school as a whole believe that it is important for younger children to learn about what an extremist is early on in the education system in order to stop them from making false judgements. These lessons will impact their views on things that extremists believe in and their actions.

In these classes, the students were taught that people were being radicalised and targeted by certain groups because of what they believe in. This then lead the students to think how this would impact their lives, their view on the world, and how they judge other people in certain situations.

“Many people classify whole religions as extremists and this is wrong, in my opinion”- Miss Martin says, who strongly believes that we are doing this topic on SMSC Day for a good reason this year. She believes that it is crucial that everyone is aware of what is going on around the world as well as in our country. The department have chosen this subject as they hope that it will teach children what is going on in the world and how it may influence some of the children to pursue a career in the government and/or law enforcement.
