Today, Year 10 have been learning about sunburn. They have been learning about the danger of the sun and how it can cause skin cancer. They have been doing varied activities to discover how dangerous UV light can be on the skin.

This campaign has been set up by Teenage Cancer Trust to raise awareness of skin cancer, as many teenagers go without wearing sun cream in order to get a tan. Many big companies have backed this campaign by spreading awareness about the danger of not protecting yourself against the UV rays from the sun, as well as sunbeds.

One of the activities was to spot cancerous moles, which are common signs of skin cancer. They chose to do this as many teenagers don’t realise the danger of the sun, and 62% off 15-24 year olds have been diagnosed with skin cancer. This is the reason that West Lakes have decided to teach 14-15 year olds these dangers before the summer holidays.

They also have been taught the danger signs of burning. If you burn your skin in the sun, you risk a higher chance of getting skin cancer. Also, there was information on how to cover up to avoid burning while staying cool. When a student was asked why the session was important, they said, “I didn’t even realise how dangerous the sun could be” and “it had made me choose to cover up”. A teacher said, “many young lives are ruined by skin cancer, and this session will hopefully keep our students safe during the summer holidays, helping them come back to school healthy.”
