The Start of Infinity, The Future Zone, and Q&A

Students from all across Cumbria were selected to take part in the Infinity Festival on the 28th September 2017, taking place at West Lakes Academy.

The day started with student ambassadors from West Lakes Academy greeting school students and their teachers in the foyer. They were greeted with a spectacular temporary mural - an arch of butterflies running across the sides of the walls, with each butterfly representing a single thought. Participants crafted the origami butterflies from a variety of colours of paper.

The students were led by their respective tour guides and group ambassadors to ‘The Future Zone’ which housed the cryopod, a VR headset with games, a plane simulator and a number of exciting activities. They were then brought to the first talk of the day- Radio frequency engineering, led by Professor Danielle George, followed by Dr Steven Le Comber.

The sessions were followed with a short Q&A, with questions such as, “Will robots be in our houses?”, and that question was answered by saying that in Japan they already have robots that look after the elderly because there are more old people than young people in Japan. There is also some robot seals that that the older generation kept as pets and did not want to give back, the whole audience were very interested in these seals and “awed” at the thought of cute robot seals.

It appears that the effects of science may just make us more inquisitive.
